The Elusive Good Egg Series
The Elusive Good Egg is a series of experiments that include formal hybrids existing between the digital and the analogue worlds and hybrid narratives that are presented through animation, performance, wearables and sound simultaneously. These works borrow from retro sci-fi cartoons, fantastical and absurd aesthetics to question traditional family making, reproductive technology, gender, identity and the heteronormative language used within the world of in/fertility. These works were first shown at the end of a three month artist residency at St. Margaret's House, London in April 2022. As part of it, it also involved a community event for people affected by subfertility, stillbirth and miscarriage and an online screening of "In Vitro" a hybrid performance experiment that reflected on our period of pandemic isolation experienced through different types of screens.
With a specific interest towards deconstructing and re-inventing visual poetics rooted in folklore and storytelling. I questioned the concept of 'a good egg' as a saying that metaphorically alludes to moral and quality binary judgement, and the literal requirement to have a good egg as part of the complex medicalised process of IVF. I was interested in ways to destabilise simplistic binaries around ideas of 'natural', 'technological', 'artificial', 'biological', 'digital' and 'real' in relation to the body and our stories.
